S.T.A.R.T Smart Scoliosis Program

The S.T.A.R.T. Smart program is designed to reduce and stabilize Scoliosis using a flexible dynamic brace, specially designed exercises and breathing techniques. Patients and families are given the tools and information necessary to live successfully with Scoliosis, while avoiding the need for rigid braces or surgery.

There are two reasons scoliosis can get worse, the first is growth, which can be evaluated by x-ray, blood test and genetic testing. The second is movement which can be retrained to help even those who have completed their growth.

By assessing the genetic risk of progression, the doctor can better tailor your treatment protocols specifically to your needs. Movement patterns are another signifcant problem in scoliosis, and can be changed through postural reeducation, muscle memory and activation of reflexogenic systems. Muscle imbalances responsible for postural instability and therefore can adversely affect scoliosis in both children and adults. Following a comprehensive evaluation, teatment can begin immediately.

Scoliosis can be progressive in adulthood when growth is not an aggravating factor. This tells us movement, poor posture and muscle imbalances can adversely affect Scoliosis, and therefore when the appropriate combination of treatment and exercises are applied, movement and posture can be corrected to help stabilize the spine without surgery or hard braces.

MRI is not new, however Fonar Inc. has recently released their Scoliosis Coil, a modification which makes MRI useful in the measurement of Cobb Angles.
